Life for a BDS student in a government dental college in Maharashtra is academically intensive and strongly focused on developing both theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills. In the initial years, students transition from school-level science to a detailed curriculum covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and dental anatomy, spending long hours in lectures, laboratories, and pre-clinical labs to understand the structure of the human body and oral cavity. As they progress through the course, the focus gradually shifts to clinical subjects like oral pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery, along with increasing clinical exposure through patient interactions in dental OPD and clinical postings, helping them connect theory with real dental practice. Daily life usually revolves around a structured routine of classes, pre-clinical work, clinical postings, and exam preparation, often balanced with hostel life, peer study groups, and participation in college events, cultural activities, and sports that help maintain a balanced student life. In the final phase, the compulsory internship places students in different dental departments where they actively treat patients under supervision, gaining hands-on experience in procedures like fillings, extractions, scaling, and prosthetic work, making the journey challenging yet rewarding as they prepare to become professional dentists.
